Those who d.a.r.e to lead Worksheet (Mark Sanborn)

Peer coaching is a form of mentoring, where professional staff meet regularly (once a week, bi-weekly, monthly) with a partner to discuss work and career, has long been appreciated for its value in facilitating professional and career development. Similar to mentoring, peer coaching differs in that both partners in a peer coaching relationship are considered coaching equals, regardless of differences in organizational rank or disparities in previous coaching or mentoring experience.
Peer coaches listen and provide a sounding board for their partner. Those who have done peer coaching value the ability to talk in confidence with someone outside their unit, to share questions and ideas with someone who is listening and coaching and not competing, and to have a scheduled meeting on their calendar that focuses on one's own goals, professional development, and workplace issues.

In the summer of 2008 several IT Professionals at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus started a grassroots Peer Coaching program that has built trust, enhanced collaboration, and increased Information Sharing among Illinois IT Staff.

The effort is completely voluntary; pairing administrators with team members, managers with non-managers. All benefit from coaching, with being an active listener proving to be the most important skill to keep in mind when coaching.
